I will first come right out and say that both Notability and Good Notes 5 are good apps. Neither is technically much better than the other and they both have unique features that could make one better for YOU. This may seem steep for an app, but when compared to the price of buying notebooks year after year, it’s not unreasonable. The app has a very clean design and notes are sorted into various files that you name and get to determine a color for.

The best method to sort your notes is by class. So having a folder for every class keeps things organized. Inside the folders, the notes are sorted by date created, which gives the app a chronological notebook-like feel. You are able to rearrange the notes in the folders or move the folders around if you like. Aside from the basic workings of the app, we will get into the positives Notability has. When taking notes in this app you will just continue scrolling and writing. This is perfect for lectures when you want to avoid having to flip pages. You basically just have the ability to continuously write notes without having to worry about not having enough room on the page. Notability also has a record feature, allowing you to record lectures as you take notes. I find this to be a feature that is useful if you take the time to go back and listen to your lectures. It’s nice to be able to go back to listen to any parts of a lecture you missed while following along in your notes. Notability also Is optimal for downloading power points and taking notes on them. Again, this feature is extremely useful when it comes to taking notes during lectures. It allows you to spend less time writing down what’s on the slides, and more time focusing on what the professor is actually saying. The last feature that makes Notability stand out is the ability to search within your notes. Notability developer Ginger Labs announced today that, in a change of heart, its popular note-taking app wouldn’t eventually require current users to switch to a subscription model. To clarify, I mean any and all notes, INCLUDING your handwriting. This news comes just two days after the developer announced a new subscription model where current app owners who wanted to keep the same features would be forced to start a $14.99 / year subscription (discounted to $11.99 for a limited time) by November 1st, 2022.

These swift changes come after backlash from many long-time users sharing their disdain for the new subscription model. While the company acknowledged its mistake and profusely apologized to its customers in its blog, the reason may be less than genuine. GoodNotes and Notability both are the tools that use a lasso, which is an integrated tool that can be used to cut and move notes or diagrams from one place to another. According to 9to5Mac, the change may be due to a violation of Apple’s App Store guidelines. It can also be used to change the shape or size. This is a difficult task between choosing one, but it is concluded to Notability app for recording and mathematical conversion. In the App Store review guidelines, a clause in section 3.1.2(a) explains that current paid customers must retain all functionality of the app that they paid for. Note-taking app developers changing around pricing is nothing new, and Evernote is a great example of a popular app that recently complicated its subscription models.

Evernote and Notability going subscription may mean more revenue. However, it also puts existing customers in a precarious situation where they may decide to migrate elsewhere. At least one other developer today may be taking advantage of Notability’s slip-up, with GoodNotes 5 now discounted to $3.99 from $7.99.Ĭorrection November 4th, 8:30am: Notability’s new subscription costs $14.99 per year.
